The birth of the brand . . .
Melissa Simon-Hartman is a London born artist, fashion and costume designer. Extremely proud of her Trinidadian and Ghanaian heritage, you will see the cultural influences of her West Indian and West African background in the work presented through her own label, Simon-Hartman.
The Simon-Hartman brand was born in 2009 from a vision by founder Melissa-Simon-Hartman who was determined to create statement footwear and accessory pieces which could be works of art rather than just something to wear.
Simon-Hartman footwear made its official debut in 2013 at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin gracing the feet of the models showcasing the collection of British celebrity fashion designer and stylist, Romero Bryan. This received critical acclaim from the fashion elite.
The label has since evolved into a distinctive name that specialises in displayable and wearable art. The essence of Simon-Hartman is to capture the spirit of artistry, creativity and great craftsmanship. Something Melissa knows all too well, with her vast experience as an artist and theatrical costume designer.
This knowledge and experience play a crucial part in each and every design created by Melissa, making each piece of her collection captivatingly beautiful. Anyone with a true appreciation for luxury and style will know that there is no comparison to handcraftsmanship, the personalised comfort, attention to detail, unique finishes, the balance of artistic flair and emotional labour make each piece impeccably inimitable.
Melissa’s creative accomplishments include designing award-winning costumes for the Notting Hill Carnival. A past nominee for the Alan Young ‘Art Student of the Year’ award. Featured in the first edition of ‘Black Who’s Who’ publication on black achievers in Britain, and ‘Trinidad & Tobago through the eye of the artist’ exhibition held at the Commonwealth Institute.
Melissa also works on large-scale costume design projects for carnivals, theme wear design for the fitness industry and national & international performances.
Her existing carnival label LEGION MAS will solely provide Individual Costume services to UK bands taking part in Notting Hill Carnival and offer International carnival costume design services from 2019 onwards.
